Hazardous Waste
Building permit applicants are required to have the soil tested to determine the presence of hazardous waste. San Francisco’s Hazardous Waste Ordinance requires testing when:
- The permit involves the disturbance of 50 cubic yards or more of soil.
- The land referenced in the permit is located bayward of the high tide line or in any area designated as requiring soil testing by the Department of Public Works.
- Property that has been continuously zoned residential since 1921 and of which the Department of Public Works has no reason to believe the land is hazardous.
